We all have an expectation that when we call 911, help will come. But that’s not always the case. This summer, reports surfaced about the difficulty 911 dispatchers have locating calls made from mobile phones--because carriers failed to upgrade their equipment.
This
week, the FCC proposed rules that will strengthen the location accuracy
requirements for wireless calls to 911. It is estimated that the
FCC could save more than 10,000
lives annually by adopting these rules.
Many individuals in the U.S.,
particularly those who are low-income, rely solely on wireless devices. 911
location accuracy is particularly important for victims of domestic violence,
the deaf and hard of hearing community, and children who may not know where
they are located.
The
fact that the industry has failed to collectively address this despite widespread
reports of failed location accuracy demonstrates the need for FCC
intervention. Sign our petition here
to tell the FCC they must ensure that help will arrive for all 911 calls.
